World's Most Competitive Race Announces Line-Up - The RAK Half Marathon Welcomes the World's Best Runners Once Again

After two world records set last February, the 2010 edition of the RAK Half Marathon, taking place on Friday, 19th February, has a high standard to uphold. According to All-Athletics.com, a comprehensive athletics database, the RAK Half Marathon was the ‘top road running competition in the world’ for 2009. It also ranked as the top competition for men and third for women globally, and was the number one road running event in Asia for 2009. In just three years, this race has become world-class, with high expectations for more record-breaking performances in the UAE emirate.

Patrick Makau’s winning time of 58:52 last year remained the quickest in the world for 2009 and is the second-fastest time in history. Makau will not participate this year, focusing on a return to form.

Men’s Competition

Ethiopian runner Daniel Geda, who led through 15km last year with a world record-equalling 41:29 but finished third, returns to lead a field of remarkable depth and quality. Joining him will be compatriot and recent Zayed Half Marathon winner, Kedir Bekele. Bekele’s talent means Geda must pace himself well to stay ahead. Teammate Alemayehu Desalegn, who debuted with a 59:59 in Abu Dhabi, is also expected to perform strongly.

The Kenyan challenge, which has dominated each edition of this race so far, will be led by marathon specialist Joseph Mutai. Mutai surprised last year’s runner-up in Valencia last autumn, beating him with a race record of 59:30. He will be joined by Isaac Kiprop (59:23) and Simon Kamau (59:44), ensuring a fierce competition for East African pride in this IAAF Silver Label race.

Former World Half Marathon Champion Gabriel Joseph is the sole Tanzanian contender this time, leading the rest of the challengers in a field boasting ten sub-60-minute performers. If the weather is favorable and the wind remains calm, this fast-paced race may add another record to its impressive list.

Anticipation Builds

With such an elite line-up, the RAK Half Marathon promises thrilling performances and the possibility of new records. This year’s race will continue to build on its reputation as one of the world’s premier road running events, attracting top talent from around the globe.
